Tank Gunner is a pseudonym for a combat cavalry soldier decorated for gallantry. In response to classroom creative writing prompts, this collection of 60 stories includes ingenious and clever approaches to share non-fiction war stories as fiction. Following discovery of four combat daily operational reports he wrote 50 years ago, he knew more of the story than the three or four formal military sentences written for each daily entry over a four-month period and began adding detail regarding tactics, places, and people. Detail grew into elaborations, clarifications, and in some cases, corrections to the daily entries of these historical documents. He used his detailed work as answers for the 108 questions in The Vietnam Center and Archive at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas Oral History Project questionnaire. For unexplained reasons the Center claimed their questionnaire was proprietary and denied his request to publish their questions with his answers. He respected their wish. Energized to write again, a community college class on creative writing gave the opportunity to present the non-fiction stories for evaluation and critique. Inspired by encouragement from the instructor and classmates, the odyssey began. From there, his answers, elaborations, and clarifications formed the nucleus for over 200 non-fiction war stories, and adding two albums containing over 350 photographs, images, and graphics, he published his non-fiction work. Prompts - a collection of stories is a mix of fiction from creative writing prompts and war stories based on real people and events.

Prompts A Collection of Stories edition by Tank Gunner Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is a great read with such a wide variety of short stories for all tastes. The characters and dialogue placed me right in the middle of these situations. My favorite was Leeches, which finds soldiers in the jungle of Vietnam picking leeches off each other. This seemingly disgusting activity left me laughing at the dialog between the characters, who I feel I know personally after sharing this situation with them. Other stories left me crying and some left me to my own conclusion. I'm just starting Prompts Too!
I must start my review with a disclaimer. I personally know Tank Gunner. My review will still be honest and forthright, but just for the record, I know him. This provides me a na advantage in that I am able to ask questions such as "How much of that particular story is based in truth?" Knowing him does add depth and flavor to my appreciation of his writing.
However, these stories stand on their own merit. As a professional soldier and officer, he was responsible for hundreds of men, and it shows in his writing. He has dealt with almost every personality type the human race has to offer. His characters reflect this understanding. Their quirks and traits cover the gamut of what people do and say. He is especially adept at dialog, and has an interesting sense of humor that peeks through frequently.
These stories are mostly related to military action, but not all. His ability to tell a compelling tale is strong. If you've ever wondered about the actual emotions associated with combat and the bureaucracy of the military, these stories are a must read from someone who has been there and done that.
Prompts is a book for people who enjoy stores of all sorts. I am typically interested in books in the self-help genre but this was an excellent read. The author tells relatable and believable stories and as a reader I was drawn to his characters. Great work and I can’t wait to pick up the next one!
This is a first-rate collection of short stories, and this writer uses dialogue to define his characters as well as any author I've read.
His short stories about Vietnam are reminiscent of Bill Mauldin's Willie and Joe in World War II. What Mauldin communicates in cartoons, Tank Gunner communicates in words.
You will laugh, cry and recognize the human condition in each story. Buy it and start reading now.
Tank Gunner's, Prompts - A Collection of Stories, is an unexpectedly superlative combination of stories. I highly recommend this ebook. A couple of my favorite chapters are Gecko, an amusing story about a reptile common in Vietnam that is able to mimic the sound of a curse word and, The Snake, were an Army officer tries to blow away a little green, and deadly, viper by casually pointing his automatic pistol to the rear of his jeep and scaring the heck out of his driver. There are many more stories too numerous to recount, but all are an enjoyable read.
I read every word and processed each sentence. Many of the explanations and descriptions parallel my experiences so I could relate to the points made in the stories. I was interested in how the author brought into being each story using written words. I learned a term I'd never before heard and laughed out loud when I read it. The term was "un-ass" used to describe exiting a jeep in haste. Good job, Colonel!
Started reading this book at the recommendation of a friend. I got to say Tank can spin some tall tales. I laughed at some of the stories and scratched my head at some. Some left me saying "huh?" at the endings. I soon realized that this was to give the reader a chance to let his/her mind wonder as to the outcome and what could have been. A couple of my favorites were Bingo, Snake, and I think my favorite was the story of the two friends Maureen and Shirley. I like how the author put the Prompts before each story to help setup the story line.
The military stories seem like stuff that really happens and Tank sure got in a lot of trouble but did a lot of good along the way.
Overall a great read and can keep you entertained for hours. Would recommend this book and look forward the Tank's next one.
